Job Description

 
Automotive Paint Technicians are responsible for the preparation and painting of vehicles, ensuring that the vehicles are painted accurately and in accordance with the specifications set by the customer. Automotive Paint Technicians must have excellent attention to detail and work independently. They are also responsible for conducting repairs and general maintenance of automotive paint equipment and work with other technicians to ensure that the vehicles meet the customer’s needs. Automotive Paint Technicians are an important part of the collision repair cycle.
 

Job Duties

 
The primary responsibility of an Automotive Paint Technician is to prepare and paint vehicles. Additional duties are:

  • Applying protective coatings over areas that will not be painted, such as trunk lids or door jambs
  • Applying primer to the surface of the vehicle prior to painting to ensure that the paint adheres to the surface
  • Sanding off rust spots or other imperfections in the surface of a vehicle before painting to ensure that the paint adheres to the surface
  • Painting vehicles with auto parts such as fenders, doors, hoods, or roofs that have been damaged in accidents or need replacement
  • Preparing surfaces for painting by cleaning them thoroughly to remove grease or other contaminants that could affect the adhesion of the paint
  • Applying paint to vehicles using spray guns or rollers depending on the type of paint used and the vehicle’s surface area
  • Operation and application of paint using colour-matching technology systems
  • Applying primer to surfaces to ensure that the paint will adhere to the surface
  • Applying protective coats over painted surfaces before they dry to prevent damage from occurring during shipping or storage

 

Qualifications and Skills

 

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working in an automotive environment
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Knowledgeable in automotive paint technology and systems
  • Intuitive skills that allow for process efficiency
  • Ability to troubleshoot and identify repairs
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Well-organized

 

Pay and Benefits

 

  • Pay is negotiable
  • Benefits after 90 days
  • Relocation assistance may be available depending on applicant skills
